AMID EVIL user review
I loved Duke 3D, Blood, and Quake back in the day, but found myself disappointed by a number of recent retro-style FPSes. Not so with Amid Evil.
Amid Evil is an awesome retroish fps in the likes of games like Heretic, Hexen or Quake.
Amid Evil is sold bundled with Dusk. In a sense, these two games have a lot in common. Both are throwbacks to Quake era in visuals, mechanics and spirit. Both are old-school shooters with no modern stuff like covers, shields, regeneration or (in my opinion, the thing that ruined the genre, making the other garbage mechanics necessary) emenies with hitscan weapons. Both embrace the low-poly aesthetics, turning the ugliness imposed by the technical limitations into a deliberate art style.
Remember Heretic and Hexen? Yup, these were good games back then, they don't do em like that anym- oh wait a god damn minute they do. And this one is hella fun.
Amid Evil may be inspired by Heretic and Hexen, but it rises above those as THE best return to the FPS glory days of the 90s'. The weapons are creative and brutal, the combat is fast-paced and fun and the levels are absolutely gorgeous, with an insane amount of variety. Just like with Quake, I feel like a proper lore and story is a missed opportunity. That's how great the game design is. Can't recommend Amid Evil enough!
Amid Evil stands out among the many throwback titles we see on any given Tuesday. The game immediately drew me in with it's art direction, and surprised me to be competent in most areas. One major critique is I would have liked to see some health progression as the first few episodes feel too easy in comparison to the difficulty spikes felt later on.Love to see devs that's willing to experiment.
Great game i love the oldschool shooters from the 90s this plays very much like heretic and hexen we need more games like this like dusk and ion fury
fuqing amazin mates good job. looks amazin. FEELS ♥♥♥♥♥ AMAZING. i just beat it today. nice job and i like it alot 9999999999999999999999999999/10 i need more please.
The midway point where Hexen meets Quake and retro meets modern.
An absolutely beautiful game.
Though it didn't really fully click for me for some reason, I'll still recommend it because it's got a lot going tor it in terms of graphics and gameplay.
The slightly overlooked cousin of New Blood published DUSK, AMID EVIL capitalizes on the retro FPS niche with drastically varying worlds, amazing sprites, meaningful weapons, and a rotating cast of enemies.
It's cool, but although I love the style, it is clearly worse than dusk. Why? The protagonist moves slowly for an oldschool game and the weapons feel a little slow, although they're pretty original. There's a slight delay between the click and the attack, sometimes tricking your muscle memory into thinking you haven't clicked yet, so you double click - which cancels the attack, unfortunately. This leads to a lot of jumping into a bunch of enemies without attacking at all. I just wish combat and movement were more fluid like in thus! Otherwise it's a nice game.
I think I won this game in a raffle, it wasn't given to me for free by the developers though. I chose this as the reward because I thought it looked very interesting, and Indefatigable + New Blood Interactive have verified this. I'm going to buy the soundtrack standalone because it's so good, and I want to show my personal support anyways. That + writing this review demonstrates how much I love this game, since I seldom write reviews.
Amid Evil is something unique -first, if you just like FPS like Call of Duty or Battlefield 4, you are in the wrong place; now, if you enjoyed games like Doom, Blood, Unreal, and Quake, Amid Evil it's the sum of all these; the weapons are all special, the enemies runs towards you as if they really want to kill you -they can even jump between platforms to reach to you-, the speed of movement, strafing, jumping, etc. is perfect, and you'll have to master them if you want to live. This is just my review, you can see all others, they are all positive. Buy it, I had to work on a weekend to be able to purchase it -the developers delivered, and deserve the money they ask for the game. Seriously, buy it, get comfy with the video and gameplay setup, and start Amid Evil.
I loved very much that game and I felt that I found Hexen II's long lost little brother just by playing it. If you like 90's FPS classics games you'll love Amid Evil with its secrets, humor and nostalgia.
It's like DUSK but better in basically every way (except humor). The last chapter is pretty much a DMT trip. Not nearly as good as Ion Fury, but still a great experience well worth the full price.
picked it up as a bundle with dusk, not my sort of game and I just wanted to check it off my list as completed, took around 6 hours but you could take way longer if you wanted to collect everything, art style is really nice with the end levels espically be pretty amazing, theres a lot of love that went into this game and even though its not for me I still recommend :) for me though I prefered the more satisying and darker creepier tone of dusk
