Byte Driver, the 1979 revolutionary arcade racer, is back! Drive fast. Hack your enemies. Fight for your life. Survive if you can.
release date: 28 May, 2019
developer: Vector Hat
publisher: Vector Hat
About This Game In 1978, a unique machine started showing up in arcades all around the world. With its distinctive gameplay and state of the art vector graphics projected over a raster display, it quickly became a major hit. In 1979 more quarters were dropped in the coin boxes of Byte Driver than all of that year’s other machines put together.
Sadly, the combination display was notoriously failure prone and arcade operators found their upkeep difficult. By 1981 the last known Byte Driver machine went offline. Since then the whole craze has been largely forgotten.
What is Byte Driver?
Byte Driver combines a classic driving game with a bottom up shooter. Your car runs on energy. Energy and weapons are obtained by hacking the vehicles around you. You’ll have to stay alert, because the sharply twisting road and countless enemy vehicles will be trying to stop you from reaching your ultimate goal. Run out of energy, and you die.
If you're thinking this sounds like “a hard game”, you're right. Byte Driver is designed to push your reflexes to the limit. The faster you drive, the higher your score. The further you go, the more dangerous the road gets. Drive fast. Hack your enemies. Fight for your life. Survive if you can.
Don't Stress! You just want to take a nice relaxing drive through the countryside, see the sights, blow up some cars in a stress free environment? No problem! Turn on No Stress Mode and go to your happy place. No one is watching.
Drive, Hack, Fight, Survive... Byte Driver.

Byte Driver user review
I dig it. It's like if they made a Vectrex in 2019 but kept the scope of the games the same. The whole car hacking/scanning thing is a really clever mechanic and makes this a fun little game.
Byte Driver is a clever arcade driving game stylish vector graphics. The twist here is that as you drive, you are also trying to hack your rival cars to steal their energy and abilities. This means you'll have to carefully match speed and stay behind them for long enough to complete the hack. This becomes extra tricky once you reach a boss who who fires bullet patterns at you which you must dodge and weave around while staying within hacking range in order to steal their weapons and attack. All of this comes together to create a really interesting balance between fast reflexes, careful positioning, and careful decision making.
Byte Driver does everything it says it wants to on the tin. Crazy arcade car racing with lasers and frantic speeds . It uses minimalistic graphics and a lovely soundtrack to go along with the out there style of game play.
Like all the best classics, seemingly simple at first but with a lot of depth and difficulty to master. Very cool graphical style and great music!
I initially thought this looked much like a cross between the classics Spy Hunter and Pole position with a vector Battlezone look. I wan't disappointed.
I've been driving in my car
This really takes me back to 1979 playing in the arcade, in that alternate universe.
I was friends with someone in high school because they had a Vectrex. I'm not proud of that, but it gives you an idea how much I love games like this. If the thought of a vector graphics racing game appeals to you on any level, Byte Driver is a must-have game. Also, Vector Hat games have excellent soundtracks!
